Who qualifies to be a recipient?
Building Compassion helps community service leaders in the hope to relieve their burden, so they can in turn be more effective at what they do. Our mission is to help the recipient so their ministry will be more successful. We also help retired, medically incapacitated, handicap, and uninsured ministers, missionaries and community service leaders. We only do repairs to the recipient's personal home in which they live. The recipient must be the owner of their dwelling, have no plans to sell their property, have no ability to help themselves, nor have help from another source. Building Compassion does not function with "cash on hand," rather we contact the community in which the leader serves and solicit help from them on their behalf. On occasion we have been contacted by a church who wants to help someone in their congregation. In those circumstances, the church provides the volunteers and helps solicit funds while Building Compassion then offers oversight.
Where does the money come from?
Building Compassion is a non-profit funded by donations. The money comes from people like you! When a recipient is chosen, we begin to share their story with their local community, their network of friends, local churches and businesses. Based on the needs, corporations are solicited for donations and/or required materials. Some donors give to specific homes, while others give for Building Compassion’s business expenses and staff salaries.
Which companies match employee donations?
Many nonprofits miss out on revenue simply because donors are unaware of their employers’ matching gift programs. Generally, companies only match donations and fundraising efforts made through their company's giving portal. Most companies designate the type of non-profit they will match.
Currently, Building Compassion is an approved 501(c)3 non-profit in Dell’s employee matching database. Check with your employer to see if this is an option they provide. For more information, please visit the employee matching page.

What kinds of people volunteer?
There is no one type of person involved in Building Compassion. It’s for everyone. If you're in college? Great! If you’re retired? That’s great too! If you are somewhere in between, there is a space for you. Whether you have a lot of time to give or just a little, master skills or just the will to learn - we need you. Even if you are not interested in the construction side of things, you can join volunteers with a variety of passions including food prep, photography, grant writing, marketing, fundraising and more.
Are there different ways to contribute?
There are a variety of ways you can give to Building Compassion. Some people prefer to give on a regular (monthly, quarterly or yearly) basis. Some prefer to give without a specific schedule. Should you choose to make a gift to Building Compassion, you can do so by mailed check, through our website with a credit card, through the Tithe.ly app, or via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). For more specifics on the options available to you, please visit our section about ways to give. To give by check, mail to Building Compassion, P. O. Box 90372, Austin, Texas 78709. Contact your employer if you plan to give through their employee matching portal.
Can I contribute directly to specific staff members?
Yes! If there is a specific individual or area you would like to support, you can designate that at the time you make your gift by indicating in the Note/Memo area of the Donation Form.
What are the requirements to be a volunteer?
All Building Compassion staff and volunteers go through a screening process that consists of an application, a liability waiver, a release of photo rights, and the approval of a criminal background check.
